Is The Great Indian Rescue Based On A True Story?

Yes. The Great Indian Rescue is based on a true story. It is about the tragic accident at the Raniganj Coalfield located in West Bengal, India, and how a man named Jaswant Singh saved the lives of 64 miners without caring for his own safety. This incident happened on 13 November 1989 in the Mahabir Colliery.

The miner workers were busy with their daily schedule of triggering blasts to take out the coal when the tragedy took place. There was an underground water table near that area which broke because of the pressure from the blasts. As water broke in, the lives of 220 miners were in danger. Six people died immediately after it, while 65 others remained trapped and unsure of their fate.

When all conventional methods of rescue were proving to be futile, a new ray of hope in the form of Jaswant Singh Gill emerged with ideas. He suggested that they drill a well and then place a special steel rescue capsule. And finally, with the help of a crane all 65 mining workers were rescued from the pits.

And Jaswant Singh Gill came out last, making sure no one was left behind. This man has now become a national hero for his acts of intelligence and bravery saving lives. Jaswant Singh Gill was born in Sathiala, Amritsar, Punjab on 22 November 1937. He attended the Khalsa College and graduated in 1959. He was also awarded the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak in 1991 by Ramaswant Venkataram, the then-President of India.
