Is How to Blow Up A Pipeline Based On A True Story?

How to Blow Up A Pipeline, the movie is based on a book of the same name written by Andreas Malm in 2021. How to Blow Up A Pipeline is based on and inspired by real events. Even though the exact incidents may not have occurred in real life, a lot of circumstances are either inspirational or real. It is mainly based on a West Texan group that plants a bomb inside a Miami yacht.

Malm’s book is not an instruction manual, but an argument in favor of using sabotage as a method of environmental activism. It states events where the author has actively participated to stop climate change. The book consists of three parts named ‘Learning From Past Struggles’, ‘Breaking The Spell’, and ‘Fighting Despair’.

Even the creators have used their stories while making How to Blow Up A Pipeline. Daniel Goldhaber, the director, had seen his parents working in a field and heard from them how climate change will impact the future. This made him choose a radical approach to his film. Jordan Sjol, another filmmaker, had spent his childhood in rural Wyoming climbing on the glacial lakes each year.

But as years went by, he noticed the lakes had become smaller until they had completely disappeared. Ariela Barer, another crew member, was raised by a mother who was quite active in preserving the climate. The crew also interviewed climate change experts and pipeline experts to give the movie a more realistic touch. Clarrisa Thibeaux, a friend of Ariela Barer was diagnosed with leukemia maybe because she lived near a chemical plant.

This arc has also been portrayed in the film. Another inspiration was two women named Jessica Reznicek and Ruby Montoya who were arrested on the charges of terrorism after they vandalized the Dakota Access Pipeline and put a bulldozer on fire. However, the goal for making How to Blow Up A Pipeline was for people to focus on the radical changes that climate change is bringing and how to stop it collectively.

The duo convinces Alisha, Theo’s girlfriend, Shawn, a film student, Dwayne, a Texan with his own grievances, Michael, an explosives expert, and Rowan and Logan, a young couple, to commit an act of environmental terrorism. They planned to blow up a part of an oil pipeline in West Texas thinking it would be closed down.
