The themes of the manga series are romance, atonement, and peace. It explores the genre of adventure and martial arts.
The plot of the manga series is about a wandering samurai, Himura Kenshin who served in the war of Boshin during the Meiji Era but now he wanders around the countryside with his katana.
To repent for his sins that were all the people killed during the war he offers his protection to those who are weak or are in need. One day he meets with Kamiya Kaoru, a young woman who was fighting with a murderer.
Kenshin helped her in defeating the murderer and Kaoru expressing her gratefulness offered him a place to stay. He meets with many people who became his friends – Sagara Sanosuke, Myōjin Yahiko, and Takani Megumi.
They helped him in defeating new and old enemies like Shishio Makoto and Yukishiro Enishi. He also falls in love with a woman named Yukishiro Tomoe and marries her. She is also the sister of Enishi who later used her as bait to lure Kenshin.
Kenshin, in the end, killed Tomoe as he mistakes her with one of the enemies. Enishi seeing this was thirsty for revenge and he kidnaps Kamiya Kaoru by fooling Kenshin into that he killed Kaoru with a fake corpse doll.
Soon Kenshin realizes that he was fooled and sets with his friend to save Kaoru from Enishi. Kenshin defeats Enishi in a final battle and was able to save Kaoru.
In the end, four years later, Kenshin proposes to Kaoru. Kenshin and Kaoru get married and had a child named Himura Kenji. Kenshin gave away his katana to Yahiko in his ceremony as a ceremonial gift.
