They were killed in a gunfight and the whole operation was named Operation Cocoon. His death was celebrated by many villagers as the ‘death of the devil’.
The two states had to combine their forces for this manhunt and it is known as one of the costliest manhunts in history.

Koose Munisamy Veerappan was a smuggler who smuggled sandalwood and a poacher who poached almost 3,000 elephants for their tusk. He was a poacher turned domestic terrorist who killed 184 people.
Veerappan married Muthulakshmi and had two daughters. He accompanied his uncle, Saalvai Gounder in his criminal activities, and at the age of seventeen, he killed his first men. After that, he killed anyone who came between his activities.
Indian government started noticing him when he kidnapped and killed Chidambaram Sathyamangalam Taluka forest officer and then an IFS officer. He also kidnapped many known figures like Rajkumar, the Kannada famous actor, and many politicians.
He killed anyone who he thinks is an associate of the police and became a killing machine. He got the name ‘The Robin Hood Of India’ from asking for ransom by kidnapping a prominent leader. He got support from the banned organizations in the state.
He ruled the southern forests of India for 36 years.
