It has been adapted from a light novel series titled Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai written by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Kēji Mizoguchi. Also known as Seishun Buta Yarō wa Banīgāru Senpai no Yume o Minai, this light novel series has been published by ASCII Media Works on 10th April 2014 and is ongoing with 13 volumes till now.

The story of Bunny Girl Senpai is about Sakuta, Mai, and a mysterious condition called Adolescence Syndrome. The anime starts with Sakuta finding a page from his diary dated 6th May where he met a girl in his school who was dressed as a Bunny Girl. He however has no memories of that incident except for what was written there.
The girl Mai is a child actor and her reason for going to school dressed as Bunny Girl was to see if people would notice her. No one paid any attention, except Sakuta which made her think she was suffering from Adolescence Syndrome. This condition had affected Sakuta’s sister, Kaede in the past and he did not wish for Mai to be affected. He takes responsibility for getting to the bottom of it while creating a deep bond with Mai.
